Animal reproduction studies have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women.
There are no controlled studies in breastfeeding women, however the risk of untoward effects to a breastfed infant is possible; or, controlled studies show only minimal non-threatening adverse effects. Drugs should be given only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the infant.
Side Effects: Cough, hypersensitivity, hypoglycemia, pancreatitis, nasopharyngitis.
Drug Interaction: Linagliptin is known to interact with other drugs like glibenclamide, rifampicin, ritonavir, simvastatin. Always consult your physician for the change of dose regimen or an alternative drug of choice that may strictly be required.
Mechanism Of Action: Linagliptin is a competitive and reversible dipeptidyl peptidase (DPP)-4 enzyme inhibitor that slows the breakdown of insulinotropic hormone glucagon-like peptide (GLP)-1 for better glycemic control in diabetes patients. GLP and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) are incretin hormones that increase the production and release of insulin from pancreatic beta cells and decrease the release of glucagon from pancreatic alpha cells.
