Animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks.
There are no controlled studies in breastfeeding women, however the risk of untoward effects to a breastfed infant is possible; or, controlled studies show only minimal non-threatening adverse effects. Drugs should be given only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the infant.
Typical usage: Psoriasis.
Side Effects: Severe inflammation, irritation, contact dermatitis, purple brown staining of skin.
Drug Interaction: Tell your doctor of all prescription and nonprescription medication you may use. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
Mechanism Of Action: Dithranol restores the normal rate of epidermal cell proliferation and keratinization by reducing the mitotic activity of the hyperplastic epidermis of psoriasis. In vitro studies show that dithranol prolongs the prophase of mitosis for keratinocytes and leukocytes; in vivo studies show that dithranol inhibits DNA synthesis and may increase the release of reactive oxygen species, upsetting oxidative metabolic processes.
