Serum sickness, pseudomembranous colitis, dizziness, headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, insomnia, nervousness, abdominal pain, skin rashes, vaginitis.
Probenecid (Benemid) may increase the blood concentration of cefprozil by decreasing excretion of cefprozil by the kidney. This interaction is sometimes used to enhance the effect of cephalosporins. Combining cefprozil with aminoglycosides (for example, tobramycin) produces additive bacterial killing effects but also may increase the risk of harmful effects to the kidney.
MECHANISM OF ACTION
By binding to specific penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located inside the bacterial cell wall, it inhibits the third and last stage of bacterial cell wall synthesis. Cell lysis is then mediated by bacterial cell wall autolytic enzymes such as autolysins; it is possible that cefprozil interferes with an autolysin inhibitor.
