TYPICAL USAGE

Chlorpheniramine is used to treat symptoms of allergic conditions such as runny nose, itchy skin rash with irregular raised patches (hives), red and swollen airways, common cold, and hay fever, food allergy, reaction to drugs or vaccines, and in insect bites.

SIDE EFFECTS

Common side-effects include sleepiness and difficulty in remaining alert, unusual tiredness or weakness, headache, dizziness, slowing of physical and emotional reactions, dry mouth, blurred vision, dry eyes, sensitivity to sunlight or artificial light, diarrhea, urge to vomit, vomiting, and skin reactions.

DRUG INTERACTION

Chlorpheniramine interacts with diazepam, nitrazepam, phenelzine, tranylcypromine or anti-depressants to cause effects like blurred vision and dry mouth. Chlorpheniramine enhances the effect of phenytoin and may cause toxic reaction. Avoid excessive alcohol consumption. Always consult your physician for the change of dose regimen or an alternative drug of choice that may strictly be required.

MECHANISM OF ACTION

Chlorpheniramine reduces allergy symptoms by blocking the activity of a natural bodily substance (histamine) that is produced during allergic reactions. It also blocks the activity of another substance (acetylcholine) that further helps dry up certain body fluids to cause relief from runny nose.

Dextromethorphan(10mg)

TYPICAL USAGE

To relieve dry coughs (coughs that do not produce phlegm or mucus on the chest).

SIDE EFFECTS

Skin rash, urge to vomit, being sick, diarrhea, drowsiness, dizziness, feeling of excitation or confusion, difficulty breathing.

DRUG INTERACTION

Other cough and cold medicine, alcohol or other CNS depressants such as monoamine oxidase inhibitors, other medicines for mental health conditions, and medicines for heart problems such as amiodarone, haloperidol, propafenone, quinidine, SRRIs, and thioridazine should not be taken along with dextromethorphan. Always consult your physician for the change of dose regimen or an alternative drug of choice that may strictly be required.

MECHANISM OF ACTION

Dextromethorphan acts on the brain and increases the threshold for coughing or suppresses coughing.

INTERACTIONS

Can I take Corex Dx Cough(50ml) during pregnancy?

Studies in animals have shown risk to fetus, however there are no sufficient studies in humans. This drug may be used in pregnant women if benefit outweighs the risk. Patients should follow the advice of the doctor regarding its use.

Can I take Corex Dx Cough(50ml) while breastfeeding/lactation?

Moderately safe: No studies have been conducted in breastfeeding women, however there is possibility of ill effect to the breastfed infants; or studies conducted in breastfeeding women show minimal non-threatening side effects to the infants.
