DRUG INTERACTION

Cranberry is known to have a negative effect on certain drugs like warfarin. There may be interference with the effectiveness of the drug. Cranberry may increase the absorption of vitamin B12 in patients who also are taking proton pump inhibitors and that it may allow the kidneys to metabolize weakly alkaline drugs (such as antidepressants and opioids) more rapidly, thus reducing their effectiveness.

MECHANISM OF ACTION

Cranberry Extract ability to prevent bacterial binding to host cell surface membranes and have potent inhibitory property of bacterial adherence of Escherichia coli and other gram-negative uro-pathogens. Cranberry has been found to specifically inhibit hemagglutination of E. coli by expression of types 1 and P adhesin through the component compounds fructose and proanthocyanidins.

INTERACTIONS

Can I take Cranpac D during pregnancy?

Studies in animals have shown risk to fetus, however there are no sufficient studies in humans. This drug may be used in pregnant women if benefit outweighs the risk. Patients should follow the advice of the doctor regarding its use.

Can I take Cranpac D while breastfeeding/lactation?

Possibly unsafe: Evidence from studies in breastfeeding women show that there is a definite risk of side effects to the breastfed infants. However, use of the drug in breastfeeding women is acceptable in spite of the risk to the infants, if the drug is needed in a life-threatening situation or for a serious disease for which safer drugs cannot be used or are ineffective. Patients should follow the advice of the doctor regarding its use.
