Aspirin(75 mg)

SALT INFORMATION

Aspirin(75 mg)

TYPICAL USAGE

Aspirin is used to treat mild to moderate pain including headache, toothache, sore throat, period pains, symptomatic relief of sprains, strains, joint and connective tissue pain, lower back pain, pain in buttocks, hips, or adjacent parts, fever and feverish colds, muscle pain, joint swelling, stiffness and pain, and reduce fever. At a lower dose, it is used to reduce the likelihood of heart attack in case the patient has had heart attack, anginal pain, heart surgery or stroke.

SIDE EFFECTS

Severe allergic reaction including skin rash and itching, swelling of eyelids, face, lips, mouth or tongue, breathlessness or worsening of asthma attacks, stomach upset, pain, stomach and intestinal ulcers and bleeding leading to vomiting or black stools, bruising, ringing or buzzing in the ear.

DRUG INTERACTION

Use of aspirin along with other pain-killers or corticosteroids may increase the likelihood of stomach and intestinal side effects. Aspirin may aggravate the effects of diuretics, phenytoin and valproate. Aspirin administered with anticoagulants such as warfarin may cause increased risk of bleeding. Metoclopramide may slow down the effects of aspirin. Aspirin may delay the removal of methotrexate and thus may cause toxic effects. Always consult your physician for the change of dose regimen or an alternative drug of choice that may strictly be required.

MECHANISM OF ACTION

Chemicals like prostaglandins are released when there is injury, infection or inflammation and this causes pain and fever. Aspirin decreases the amount of this chemical (prostaglandin) in the body by blocking the enzyme that makes prostaglandins (cyclooxygenase). As a consequence, swelling, pain, and fever are reduced. Inhibition of prostaglandins also reduces the function of platelets and the ability of blood to clot.
