SIDE EFFECTS

Dizziness, Headache, Nausea, Palpitation, Constipation, Insomnia, Hypotension.

DRUG INTERACTION

Drotaverine is known to interact with other drugs like levodopa. These interactions are sometimes beneficial and sometimes may pose threats to life. Always consult your physician for the change of dose regimen or an alternative drug of choice that may strictly be required.

MECHANISM OF ACTION

Drotaverine inhibits phosphodiesterases hydrolysing cAMP, thereby increasing cAMP concentration, decreasing Ca uptake of the cells and changing the distribution of calcium among the cells. It may also have minor allosteric calcium channel blocking properties.

TYPICAL USAGE

It is used to relieves muscular pain, menstrual cramps (pain in the lower abdomen during women's menstrual period), inflammation, headaches, and dental pain.

SIDE EFFECTS

Urge to vomit (nausea), diarrhea, excessive passing of gas, abdominal pain, stomach ulcer, constipation, inflammation of pancreas, swelling, irritation of skin, bleeding in stomach, proteinuria, jaundice, breakdown of blood cells, inflammation of intestine, indigestion, heartburn, dizziness, headache, drowsiness, skin rashes and increased level of liver enzymes.

DRUG INTERACTION

Mefenamic acid is known to interact with drugs like warfarin, lithium, digoxin, captopril, enalapril, sulfapyridine, probenecid, methotrexate, ciclosporin, prednisone, torasemide and antidiabetic medications. Always consult your physician for the change of dose regimen or an alternative drug of choice that may strictly be required.

MECHANISM OF ACTION

It reduces pain and inflammation (swelling, redness and itching) by inhibiting the production enzyme cyclo-oxygenase (Chemical resposible for pain and inflammation).

INTERACTIONS

Can I take Drofem during pregnancy?

Studies in animals have shown risk to fetus, however there are no sufficient studies in humans. This drug may be used in pregnant women if benefit outweighs the risk. Patients should follow the advice of the doctor regarding its use.

Can I take Drofem while breastfeeding/lactation?

Moderately safe: No studies have been conducted in breastfeeding women, however there is possibility of ill effect to the breastfed infants; or studies conducted in breastfeeding women show minimal non-threatening side effects to the infants. Drugs should be given only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the infant. Patients should follow the advice of the doctor regarding its use.
