TYPICAL USAGE

To treat infections of the sinuses (sinusitis), long term inflammation of the airways or lungs, pneumonia acquired outside the hospital (community acquired), mild to moderate pelvic inflammatory disease (infections of female upper genital tract, including salpingitis and endometritis without an associated tubo-ovarian or pelvic abscess), skin, eye and abdominal infections.

SIDE EFFECTS

Dizziness, headache, disturbed sleep, urge to vomit (nausea), vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, indigestion, allergic reactions (skin rashes, fever), low hemoglobin or red blood cells (anemia), low platelets (thrombocytopenia), liver dysfunction (elevated liver enzymes), muscle pain, relapse infection of intestine (pseudomembranous colitis), temporary loss of consciousness, excessive sweating, restlessness.

DRUG INTERACTION

Use with antiarrhythmics (quinidine, disopyramide, amiodarone, sotalol, dofetilide, hydroquinidine, ibutilide), antipsychotics (phenothiazines, sertindole, haloperidol, pimozide,), antimicrobials (saquinavir, sparfloxacin, pentamidine, intravenous erythromycin, antimalarials (halofantrine), antihistamines (astemizole, terfenadine, mizolastine), tricyclic antidepressive agents, other medicnes (cisapride) may increase risk of heart problems. Use with didanosine and sucralfate reduces activity of moxifloxacin. Always consult your physician for the change of dose regimen or an alternative drug of choice that may strictly be required.

MECHANISM OF ACTION

Moxifloxacin belongs to a group of antibiotics called fluoroquinolones and kills a wide range of infection causing bacteria both gram positive and gram negative. It acts by inhibiting enzymes (DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV) involved in DNA processes that are essential for bacterial growth and survival thereby killing the bacteria.

INTERACTIONS

Can I take Moxif (400mg) during pregnancy?

Studies in animals have shown risk to fetus, however there are no sufficient studies in humans. This drug may be used in pregnant women if benefit outweighs the risk. Patients should follow the advice of the doctor regarding its use.

Can I take Moxif (400mg) while breastfeeding/lactation?

Contraindicated: The drug should not be used by breastfeeding women, as evidences from studies have shown that there is a high risk of causing significant damage to infants.
