TYPICAL USAGE

Hypertension, diabetic nephropathy, heart failure.

SIDE EFFECTS

Headache, diarrhea, pharyngitis, hematuria, rhinitis, bronchitis, sinusitis, hyperglycemia.

DRUG INTERACTION

Olmesartan medoxomil is known to interact with other drugs like ACE inhibitors, potassium-sparing diuretics, potassium salts, and drugs that may increase serum potassium (e.g. ciclosporin, eplerenone), concomitant use with NSAIDs. Always consult your physician for the change of dose regimen or an alternative drug of choice that may strictly be required.

MECHANISM OF ACTION

Olmesartan medoxomil is an ARB that selectively inhibits the binding of angiotensin II to AT1, which is found in many tissues such as vascular smooth muscle and the adrenal glands. This effectively inhibits the AT1-mediated vasoconstrictive and aldosterone-secreting effects of angiotensin II and results in a decrease in vascular resistance and blood pressure. Olmesartan is selective for AT1 and has a 12,500 times greater affinity for AT1 than the AT2 receptor.

Amlodipine(5 mg)

TYPICAL USAGE

Amlodipine is used to treat high blood pressure and various forms of angina (severe pain in chest which may travel into the jaw, neck and arms or narrowing of the coronary arteries of the heart.

SIDE EFFECTS

The common side effects are headache, swelling of part or whole of body, rash, unusual tiredness, urge to vomit, facial redness and feeling of warmth (flushing), sleepiness, dizziness, headache, swelling of ankle, face, lips and eyes, sleepiness, abdominal pain, indigestion, drowsiness, and thumping, pounding or fluttering sensation in the chest

DRUG INTERACTION

Grapefruit juice may increase plasma concentration of amlodipine. Amlodipine may cause excessive reduction in blood pressure on interaction with calcium, sildenafil, tadalafil or vardenafil. Always consult your physician for the change of dose regimen or an alternative drug of choice that may strictly be required.

MECHANISM OF ACTION

Amlodipine is an anti-hypertensive drug that relaxes and opens blood vessels, thus, improving the flow of blood and lowering the blood pressure. It improves blood and oxygen supply to the heart muscles.

INTERACTIONS

Can I take Olmezest Am(40mg) during pregnancy?

Studies in animals have shown risk to fetus, however there are no sufficient studies in humans. This drug may be used in pregnant women if benefit outweighs the risk. Patients should follow the advice of the doctor regarding its use.

Can I take Olmezest Am(40mg) while breastfeeding/lactation?

Moderately safe: No studies have been conducted in breastfeeding women, however there is possibility of ill effect to the breastfed infants; or studies conducted in breastfeeding women show minimal non-threatening side effects to the infants. Drugs should be given only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the infant. Patients should follow the advice of the doctor regarding its use.
