To treat migraine headaches and mental alertness. Caffeine is also used in combination with pain killers (aspirin and paracetamol) and as a supportive treatment in asthma.
At higher doses (more than 600 mg per day), it may cause anxiety, agitation, diarrhea, severe urge to vomit (nausea), vomiting, rapid heart rate (tachycardia), rapid heartbeat (palpitations), inability to sleep (insomnia), restlessness, nervousness, involuntarily shaking of a body part (tremor) and headache.
Taking caffeine along with ephedrine might cause excessive brain stimulation and sometimes serious side effects and heart problems. Phenytoin and smoking with caffeine may decrease level of caffeine in blood. Certain drugs like cimetidine, disulfiram, fluoroquinolones, mexiletine and oral contraceptives may enhance the effects of caffeine by increasing its concentration in blood. Always consult your physician for the change of dose regimen or an alternative drug of choice that may strictly be required.
MECHANISM OF ACTION
Caffeine acts by stimulating the brain (central nervous system), heart, and muscles. It also improves the effectiveness of pain-relievers such as paracetamol and aspirin.
Mild to moderate ulcerative colitis and maintenance of remission.
Bronchospasm, nephrotic syndrome, blood dyscrasias, myocarditis, pericarditis, headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, rashes, hair loss, chest pain, leukopenia.
Mesalazine is known to interact with other drugs like lactulose. Always consult your physician for the change of dose regimen or an alternative drug of choice that may strictly be required.
MECHANISM OF ACTION
Mucosal production of arachidonic acid metabolites, both through the cyclooxygenase pathways, i.e., prostanoids, and through the lipoxygenase pathways, i.e., leukotrienes and hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acids, is increased in patients with chronic inflammatory bowel disease, and it is possible that mesalazine diminishes inflammation by blocking cyclooxygenase and inhibiting prostaglandin production in the colon.
