Ethamsylate is used in the treatment of excessive blood loss during menstruation/periods (menorrhagia) in women 

SIDE EFFECTS

Fever, headache, skin rash, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, allergic reaction.

MECHANISM OF ACTION

Ethamsylate belongs to a class of medications called hemostatic agent. It acts by stopping bleeding from small blood vessels by stabilizing the wall of these blood vessels and improving platelet (blood cells that help in clotting)function.

DOSAGE

* Always follow the instructions of doctor regarding the dosage and duration. * Menorrhagia: 500mg four times daily from the start of bleeding until menstruation ceases * Surgery induced blood loss: 250-500 mg 4-6 hourly as needed.

DOs and DON'Ts

Do not start or continue ethamsylate and consult your doctor: * If you are allergic to ethamsylate or any other ingredients in the medicine, or you have allergy to sulfa drugs or wheat * If you develop fever with treatment * If you have non-cancerous growths called fibroids in your womb * If you have ‘porphyria’ (a rare blood pigment disorder that affects skin and other organs, and causes abdominal pain) * If you are pregnant or breast feeding a babyDo not use the product before onset of bleeding during periods.

CONTRA INDICATIONS

* Patients allergic to ethamsylate or any other ingredients in the medicine * Patients allergic to sulfa drugs or wheat proteins * Patients who have non-cancerous growths called fibroids in the womb, or other diseases of the womb and ovaries * Patients with porphyria * Pregnant and breast feeding women
