TYPICAL USAGE

Ciprofloxacin is used to treat the bacterial infections including lower respiratory tract (lung) infections (pneumonia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cystic fibrosis or in bronchiectasis), ear or sinus infections, urinary tract infections (bladder and kidney infections), reproductive tract infections (gonorrhea), gastrointestinal tract infections (gastroenteritis), intra-abdominal infections, skin and soft tissue infections, bone and joint infections, and anthrax inhalation exposure. It is also used as prophylaxis of invasive infections such as meningitis (brain inflammation) and in the management of patients with low white blood cell counts (neutropenia) who have a fever that is suspected to be due to a bacterial infection.

SIDE EFFECTS

Common side-effects include nausea, diarrhea, joint pains in children. Other uncommon side-effects like fungal superinfections, high concentration of eosinophils, a type of white blood cell, decreased appetite, hyperactivity or agitation, headache, dizziness, sleeping problems, or taste disorders, vomiting, abdominal pain, digestive problems such as stomach upset, (indigestion/heartburn), or wind, increased amounts of certain substances in the blood (transaminases and/or bilirubin), rash, itching, or hives, joint pain in adults, poor kidney function, pains in your muscles and bones, feeling unwell (asthenia), or fever, increase in blood alkaline phosphatase (a certain substance in the blood) may also occur.

DRUG INTERACTION

Caution should be taken while taking following medicines along with Ciprofloxacin: Vitamin K antagonists (e.g. warfarin, acenocoumarol, phenprocoumon or fluindione) or other oral anti-coagulants, theophylline, phenytoin, ropinirole, phenytoin, cyclosporine, probenecid, metoclopramide, methotrexate, tizanidine, clozapine, olanzapine, anti-arrhythmics (e.g. quinidine, hydroquinidine, disopyramide, amiodarone, sotalol, dofetilide, ibutilide), tricyclic antidepressants, some antimicrobials (that belong to the group of macrolides), some antipsychotics. Ciprofloxacin may increase the levels of the following medicines in your blood such as pentoxifylline, caffeine, duloxetine, lidocaine, sildenafil. Some medicines reduce the effect of ciprofloxacin such as antacids, omeprazole, mineral supplements, sucralfate, a polymeric phosphate binder (e.g. sevelamer or lanthanum carbonate), medicines or supplements containing calcium, magnesium, aluminium or iron). Always consult your physician for the change of dose regimen or an alternative drug of choice that may strictly be required.

MECHANISM OF ACTION

Ciprofloxacin belongs to the group of medicines called fluoroquinolone antibiotics. They cure the infection by inhibiting the DNA formation and killing the bacteria.

INTERACTIONS

Can I take Xipro (500mg) during pregnancy?

Studies in animals have shown risk to fetus, however there are no sufficient studies in humans. This drug may be used in pregnant women if benefit outweighs the risk. Patients should follow the advice of the doctor regarding its use.

Can I take Xipro (500mg) while breastfeeding/lactation?

Contraindicated: The drug should not be used by breastfeeding women, as evidences from studies have shown that there is a high risk of causing significant damage to infants.

Can I take Xipro (500mg) with alcohol?
