TYPICAL USAGE

Cefixime is used in the treatment of infections of ear, nose, sinuses, throat, chest, lungs and urinary system.

SIDE EFFECTS

Abdominal pain, loose stools, indigestion, urge to vomit, vomiting, excessive passing of wind or gas, jaundice, superinfection in the gut, increased level of liver enzyme in the blood, headaches, dizziness, breathlessness, kidney dysfunction, severe allergic reactions leading to swallowing or breathing problems, swelling of lips, face, throat or tongue, blistering or bleeding of the skin around lips, eyes, mouth, nose and genitals, flu-like symptoms and fever, severe blistering rash, skin rash, skin lesions with a pink/red ring and a pale centre, bruising or bleeding, joint pain, skin rashes with itching, itching in the genital or vaginal area, increase or decrease in number of blood cells.

DRUG INTERACTION

Cefixime may increase the bleeding tendency with blood thinning drugs such as warfarin. Probenecid may decrease the removal of cefixime by the kidneys. Always consult your physician for the change of dose regimen or an alternative drug of choice that may strictly be required.

MECHANISM OF ACTION

Cefixime kills bacteria by binding to specific proteins and preventing the formation of the walls that surround them. The walls are necessary to protect bacteria from their environment and to keep the contents of the bacterial cell together. 

Ornidazole(500mg)

TYPICAL USAGE

To treat certain types of vaginal, urinary tract and intestinal infections, or some specific infections that are in the body, which may be caused by anaerobic bacteria (bacteria that do not use oxygen) or amoeba. It is also used for preventive (prophylactic) treatment during surgery, treat amoebiasis, amoebic dysentery, bacterial infection of vagina (bacterial vaginosis), diarrhea caused by protozoan parasite (giardiasis), and acute infections of vagina and/or urethra (trichomoniasis).

SIDE EFFECTS

Drowsiness, dizziness, headache, shaking, rigidity, poor coordination, fits, tiredness, temporary loss of consciousness, fainting, sensation of spinning or rotation (vertigo), urge to vomit (nausea), vomiting, pain in abdomen, taste disturbances, skin reactions like rash, itching and inflammation.

DRUG INTERACTION

Ornidazole may interact with oral anticoagulants (warfarin) and muscle-relaxant (vecuronium bromide). Always consult your physician for the change of dose regimen or an alternative drug of choice that may strictly be required.

MECHANISM OF ACTION

Ornidazole is active against the protozoa and anaerobic bacteria that are causing the infections. Action mechanism is associated with inhibiting the structure of DNA in susceptible microorganisms.

INTERACTIONS

Can I take Zifi Oz Tab during pregnancy?

Studies in animals have shown risk to fetus, however there are no sufficient studies in humans. This drug may be used in pregnant women if benefit outweighs the risk. Patients should follow the advice of the doctor regarding its use.

Can I take Zifi Oz Tab while breastfeeding/lactation?

Moderately safe: No studies have been conducted in breastfeeding women, however there is possibility of ill effect to the breastfed infants; or studies conducted in breastfeeding women show minimal non-threatening side effects to the infants. Drugs should be given only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the infant. Patients should follow the advice of the doctor regarding its use.
