Etizolam is used to treat anxiety, panic disorders (sudden, unexpected attacks of extreme fear, and worry) and sleep disorders. 


* Common: Drowsiness, , incoordination, difficulty speaking, involuntary eye movements (nystagmus), involuntary closure of eyes (blepharospasm) * Uncommon: decreased heart rate, fall in blood pressure, interference with breathing, unconsciousness * Frequency not known: weakness, blurring of vision, yawning, decreased appetite, nausea and vomiting, muscle relaxation (feeling powerless when attempting to make a movement), dryness of mouth, headache, rebound sleeplessness, mood enhancement, mental relaxation and relief from anxiety, loss of mental inhibition, confusion, memory loss * If treatment with etizolam is suddenly stopped, it may cause the following effects: anxiety, sleeplessness, headache, dizziness, ringing in ears, loss of appetite, vomiting, nausea, tremor, weakness, perspiration, irritability, intolerance to visual and auditory stimuli, abnormal pounding or thumping sensation in chest, rapid heart rate and drop in blood pressure on especially on standing.


* Etizolam is known to interact with CNS depressants like antihistamines (e.g. cyclizine, hydroxyzine, chlorpheniramine), antipsychotics (e.g. risperidone, aripiprazole, haloperidol, chlorpromazine), antidepressant (e.g. fluoxetine, fluvoxamine, sertraline), anesthetics or sedative (e.g. alprazolam, clonazepam) and increase the adverse effects of the drugs. * It is also known to interact with drugs used for treatment of hypertension, fits, and other drugs like diazoxide, disulfiram, esomeprazole and omeprazole, monoxidine, minoxidil, nitroprusside, nitrates, nabitone, muscle relaxants. * It is also known to interact with antifungal medication and antibiotics. * Always consult your doctor for the change of dose regimen or an alternative drug of choice that may strictly be required. 


Etizolam belongs to a class of medication called benzodiazepines. It works by enhancing the action of a signaling chemical called gamma amino butyric acid (GABA), which helps to calm the brain. This, in turn, induces sleep and causes relaxation of muscles in the body. 


Always follow the instructions of doctor regarding the dosage and duration. * Anxiety disorder: 0.25-0.5 mg twice daily * Panic disorder: 0.5 mg twice daily * Insomnia: 1-2 mg dailyDose for all the indications can be increased up to a maximum of 3 mg daily.

DOs and DON'Ts

* Do not take etizolam, if you are allergic to etizolam or benzodiazepines  * Do not take etizolam beyond 12 weeks * Repeated use of etizolam may cause rebound increase in anxiety or sleeplessness. Consult your doctor if this happens * Consult your doctor before taking etizolam:                       -If you have liver, lung or breathing (bronchitis or emphysema)problems                       -If you are >65 years of age                       -If you are breast-feeding or pregnant                       -If you have a history of alcohol or drug addiction                       -If you have low blood pressure                       -If you have a history of any personality disorder * Patients who are on this medication should not drive or use heavy machinery because this medication can cause sleepiness, incoordination and can impair your reflexes. * This medication may be addictive and so should be taken only under the supervision of doctor


* Individuals who are allergic to etizolam or any other ingredient of the tablet * Individuals who suffer from phobia (irrational fear about persons, objects or situations) depression, or have suicidal tendency or aggressive behavior  * Patients suffering from raised pressure in the eyes, breathing difficulties and myasthenia gravis (disease characterized by unusual muscle weakness)

Can I take Zoly (0.5mg) during pregnancy?

Studies in animals have shown risk to fetus, however there are no sufficient studies in humans. This drug may be used in pregnant women if benefit outweighs the risk. Patients should follow the advice of the doctor regarding its use.

Can I take Zoly (0.5mg) while breastfeeding/lactation?

Moderately safe: No studies have been conducted in breastfeeding women, however there is possibility of ill effect to the breastfed infants; or studies conducted in breastfeeding women show minimal non-threatening side effects to the infants. Drugs should be given only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the infant. Patients should follow the advice of the doctor regarding its use.
